How Daily Rosehip Extract Promotes Weight Loss and Reduces Belly Fat

The study “ Daily intake of rosehip extract decreases abdominal visceral fat in pre-obese subjects: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial” by Akifumi Nagatomo et al. (2015) provides exciting insights into natural weight management. This scientific paper investigates whether a daily supplement of rosehip extract can help reduce dangerous body fat in pre-obese people. Obesity is a major global health issue that heavily increases the risk of heart disease and diabetes. Finding natural, safe foods to help manage weight is a huge priority for medical researchers today. This study builds on earlier animal studies to determine whether the natural fat-burning benefits of rosehips hold true in humans.
Why Is Obesity a Global Concern and How Can Rosehip Help?
Obesity is a serious health condition that happens when a person takes in more energy from food than they burn off through daily activity. It leads to excessive fat buildup in the body. Researchers previously discovered that tiliroside speeds up fat metabolism and improves blood sugar handling. The researchers state, “Investigations in mice have demonstrated that rosehip extract inhibits body weight gain and decreases visceral fat.” Because of these highly promising early results in the lab, the medical team decided it was time to rigorously test the natural plant extract on human subjects to determine whether it could safely reduce stubborn belly fat.
Methodology
To properly test the effects of the extract, the researchers set up a very strict 12-week clinical trial. They used a “double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study,” widely considered the gold standard for this kind of medical research. This design means that neither the patients nor the doctors knew who was getting the real pill and who was getting a fake pill. This prevents anyone’s expectations from altering the final results.
They carefully selected 32 healthy volunteers, consisting of 16 men and 16 women. These individuals were classified as preobese, meaning they had a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 25.0 to less than 30.0. The subjects were split fairly into two equal groups. One group received a special tablet containing 100 milligrams of rosehip extract, which included exactly 0.1 milligrams of the active ingredient, tiliroside. The other group received a placebo tablet that looked, smelled, and tasted exactly the same, but contained no actual rosehip.
For 12 weeks, the participants took one tablet every single day by chewing it. The researchers ensured the participants did not change their usual daily habits. They were specifically told to eat their usual diet and keep their regular physical activity routines. The study closely measured their physical details, including weight, body fat percentage, heart rate, and blood pressure. To get the most accurate view of their fat, researchers used computed tomography (CT) scans to obtain highly detailed images of the fat deep inside the participants’ bellies at the start of the study, at week 8, and at week 12. Safety was closely monitored throughout the process through detailed testing to ensure the supplement was not causing any harm.
Main Findings
The results of this 12-week study were very clear and showed that the rosehip supplement had a powerful, measurable effect on the human body. The scientists noted several major positive changes in the group taking the real extract compared to the group taking the fake placebo tablet.
Reduced Belly Fat
The most important finding was a major drop in belly fat. The participants taking the rosehip tablet lost a significant amount of visceral fat. Visceral fat is the deep, hidden fat wrapped around the internal organs, and it is the most dangerous kind of fat for your heart. According to the scientists, “Abdominal total fat area, abdominal visceral fat area, body weight, and body mass index decreased significantly in the rosehip group at week 12 compared with their baseline levels.” This shows that the extract specifically targets the type of fat most harmful to our overall health.
Lower Body Weight
Along with losing deep belly fat, the subjects in the rosehip group also saw their total body weight go down. Their BMI dropped significantly by the end of the 12 weeks. Because they did not change their diets or exercise habits during the study, this weight loss was directly linked to chewing the daily tablet. The scientific paper highlights that “the decreases in these parameters were significantly higher when compared with those in the placebo group.”
Safe With No Side Effects
Another incredibly great finding was how completely safe the extract was for the human participants. The medical researchers ran dozens of specific safety checks during the trial, including:
- Detailed blood cell counts
- Cholesterol and blood sugar monitoring
- Liver and kidney function tests
- Subjective daily symptom diaries
They proudly concluded that “there were no abnormalities, subjective symptoms, and findings that may indicate clinical problems during the study period.” This means the simple rosehip tablet helped them lose fat without causing any adverse health effects or illness.
What Does This Mean for the Future of Weight Management?
The findings of this scientific paper are very exciting for the future of weight management and preventive health. Since visceral fat is so closely linked to a dangerous condition called metabolic syndrome, a group of health issues that highly increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes, finding a completely natural way to reduce it is a huge step forward for medicine. The researchers clearly point out that “rosehip extract may be a good candidate food material for preventing obesity.”
Because participants successfully lost weight and fat without deliberately changing their daily eating or walking routines, a simple rosehip supplement could be a highly helpful tool for people struggling to manage their weight. The ANS controls things we don’t think about consciously, like heart rate and digestion.
